Evaluation

The first artefact was to demonstrate the potential of 3D walk-throughs. The artefact depicts the discussion in my Research document where I talk about 3D walk-throughs being a superior architectural method in comparison to drawn architectural designs.

My argument for that section of the document was that drawn architecture can sometimes leave clients in the position where they must “imagine” (Azza A. Arif, 2001) what the drawn structure will look like. Whereas 3D walk-throughs provide clients exploration of their desired proposition in more detail, and gives them greater information on the structure as a whole.

For this this artefact I downloaded a house, and put my own modelled furniture within it.

After the scene was finalized I had to think about the materials needed for the piece. Due to the short deadline of the presentation I couldn’t apply wood, metal or plastic materials as it would take an endless amount of time to complete. Therefore I applied ambient occlusion; this gave great detail to the piece and prevented time loss.

The next stage and most important stage was the camera angles. I needed to make sure the cameras gave off the impression that the viewer/client was walking through the house and the area outside. I think the cameras demonstrated a good walk-through cycle; the only disadvantage to this piece is that it may be a bit fast, and doesn’t allow enough time for information on the house’s layout to be absorbed.

I think the addition of the Azza A. Arif quote was a great addition to the piece. The addition of quotations should be a future reoccurring application to each individual artefact, as it will demonstrate that the artefact represents a portion of the Research document I submitted.

The feedback from my presentation was relatively positive. One of the critical feedbacks was that the camera movement was a little too fast as I expected people would say. Also Roma suggested putting some slow pan movements in there to get detailed close shots of the environment. From the questionnaire information I gathered it is clear that most people still understood it was a walk-through, which was the main objective (even without indications by me or written suggestions in the artefact itself). But overall I was pleased with this artefacts outcome and response.

First of all I would like to say that I have really enjoyed this project because I got to make this project my own. The animation was a lot more creative than my last project as I was able to experiment with more ways of portraying my story. I will now discuss and evaluate all the elements to what made this piece.

Making my environment was a very long process which acquired a lot of concentration and drafting. I changed it so many times during this project. Just before the start of our final term, it was standing at 49MB without the characters, so I cut it down by refurbishing the entire file. Eventually I got it down to 7MB, which was great, it not only meant faster rendering time but it also looked a lot better. I also changed quite a few of the materials. I decided not to use mental ray for this piece because I wanted to get the characters movements quite sharp, so every time I would render, I would get a quicker render and get a quicker understanding of whether the characters movements were on point. Even without the use of mental ray, I felt that the materials still looked effective. The only disadvantage was that sometimes when I zoomed in on the materials, they didn’t hold up well and would become pixelated and that’s when I regretted not using mental ray.

Although it seems the environment was my biggest problem, rigging, skinning and enveloping tested my skills the most. At first I rigged both characters with bones, I made them very successfully, but when skinned with the characters, bending of ligaments gave a less promising outcome. Therefore I decided to use the Cat rig which is excellent because it skinned with the mesh very well, and all the ligaments were better than bones when it came down to enveloping.

There are many successful aspects that I like about the animation as well as unsuccessful aspects. I would say one of the success’ was the movement of characters, it was a lot smoother than my last project which I am happy about. I am also happy about the way my after effect additions to the piece brought more energy and interest to the narrative. The choice in sound was pretty spot on as well.

I feel that my work also has unsuccessful aspects which I could improve on if more time was given. I believe that I could have added more choreography to my fight sequences as it was not that realistic that one of my characters would be beaten by one punch and a kick. I could also improve on mouth syncing, although it was mostly accurate, timing was off sometimes. Finally I would have included more shots of the entire scenery since it took me a long time to build it!

Nevertheless with the amount of time I had, I am proud of the end result and now I know which parts I can improve on.

Fighting sequences seem to be a lot harder to animate than I initially thought, having two characters in a scene can get so confusing with the frames, a karate chop and a punch has taken me two, almost three hours to get right.....very annoying

How to advance in 3ds Max

I think in order for me to achieve better results in 3ds Max I must look at more tutorials and read some books. I have already bought two books offline about 3ds Max but haven’t really read into them that much. This break I am determined to read both books fully while practicing what is within the books in 3ds Max itself. Although I was pleased with my work a lot this term for this project, I feel like I should be a bit more advanced in my skills.
I feel that I should also buy a Mudbox book from the internet, I feel this programme is an excellent modelling alter, it seems very easy an accessible to drawers like myself. I already have a tablet and pen, so it would be very beneficial for me use this also.

In conclusion I am rather pleased with my final piece for this of ‘Bots and Bananas’ project. At first to begin this project I began to draw some initial ideas of robots and draw some environment plans. When I came to my final choice for my robot and my environment I began to create them in 3ds Max straight away. My robot took a few weeks to construct, but wasn’t too hard to make, because my final design was relatively strong, not much was needed to change. However, the design became a real struggle later when it came to rigging, well the legs that is. Due to the robots stumpy carves it was hard to put in HI IK solvers, every time I would try to move the legs, joints would move out of place, and this caused a lot of stress on me and prevented me furthering the project. But it gave me a valuable lesson to design more carefully next time and see if the body’s structure will be easy to animate. The environment wasn’t too bad to design either, it was just a matter of getting it the way I first designed it in my drawings. I took a lot out of it because I didn’t want to have to big a file size, because it would mean long renders, and a lot of time consuming near to the deadline, and I didn’t want to risk failing on my first attempt at animating. To me this project I didn’t want to put too much into it and stress myself out, it was all about adapting in this project to the idea of animating.

Animating itself was difficult at first, getting to grips with frames. Sometimes along the way if something wasn’t animated correctly legs would end up twitching in certain scenes or even coming out of their own sockets. Excluding all these negatives, there were a lot of advantages to the this overall project. One of them being camera angles. Using the ‘range’ option in render set up helped me a big deal when changing camera angles. It helped give a bigger picture to the whole plot. I think my choice of music and noises gave a great depth to the piece as well. The robots own noises e.g. his footsteps gave him a lot more character and made it seem a lot more relatable. When it came to editing this piece in Premier I think I could have polished up the movie more with some fade ins, I think they would of complemented the change in scenes. On the subject of scenes, the actual gag itself took a while to make obvious, I kept having to re-edit when he fell over the rock so it was obvious to the viewer. The only last problem have with this project was getting a good quality on the video, I wanted to make it a lot sharper, but couldn’t do so with the options in Premier, in order to do so I would have to go back to 3ds Max and render over again. But again excluding these negatives that I have learnt from, I enjoyed the end result to my piece and think it’s very fun and enjoyable to watch.

I could have added more props to the piece but I didn’t want the surroundings to be too realistic, I want the surroundings to be quite cartoony and non-serious to help boost my characters believability as a childish robot

Along the design process I realised that the cute simple robots that I designed are not only the easiest to create but also fit the role of my story, as the character must look rather innocent and naive to pull the story off.

Most of my designs are influenced by Japanese robots; most of the structures within my designs are mirrored from them. To me they seem best because they’re rather basic in their design and not too jagged around the surfaces, they are usually roundish is most parts, which to me seems easier to animate.

Of Bots and Banana- 'Avoiding Bad Luck'- Robot Animation

Story outline- The outline of this story is about a robot who is trying to avoid bad luck, hence the name of the title ‘Avoiding Bad Luck’. During the start of the story the robot is walking down a road when he stumbles upon a load of broken pavements. The robot knowing that the broken pavement slabs are supposedly bad luck he decides to avoid them by jumping in-between them and landing on the good ones in a hopscotch manner. When he finally reaches the end he turns back to look back on his achievement. He then walks back in the other direction he was walking in before all cocky to only completely miss a banana on the pavement and slip and fall on his bottom. The story then ends with the banana on his head and him on his bottom looking towards the screen gutted.

Moving Image

Overall our Moving Image piece was of a great success. Our given script was ‘Dog’, I can’t say it was easy, because it wasn’t, conjuring a piece with the line ‘From outside the toilet we hear a difficult shit taking place’ was going to be hard from the start. Our take on the story was that the man had been hypnotised into becoming a dog. The whole piece itself is pretty much about him going through his daily routine acting like a dog, until you discover at the end (our added scene) that he was in fact hypnotised to be like. This is unveiled when his wife enters from a day at work shocked to see him in his state of acting like a dog, and a fallen ticket to a hypnotist showing.

Filming although time consuming (11 hours for one day and an hour the next day) was worth it in the end. I think it took us a while this time around compared to the One shot because we desired perfection, we had the option this time of repeating our scenes, unlike one shot we had to be done in one take. Being the camera man, this was very tiring and repetitive for me. Especially when the shots required me to use the camera without the tripod, because I had to be very still and sharp.

Our scenes in general turned our well, we were fortunate to have good weather during our park, café and street scenes and were lucky that there wasn’t that many people there to disturb out shots. We actually struggled the most with the indoor scenes when our character is at home. It was difficult to shoot due lighting. The lighting was probably the worse disadvantage through the whole process of filming because we had to get the lighting right in every scene. As it started to get darker outside meant that we had to modify the camera a lot to match the lighting, and move the lights around a bit to get it accurate to the previous scene we may have shot.

One of the great advantages we added to this piece was the POV. We gave the character/viewer the option of seeing the world through a dogs eyes in black and white. I think generally all the scenes worked very well, the actor we had playing the role of a dog was convincing and played the role well. All in all it was a long process, but considerably fun to make.

Overall I enjoyed coming up with the concept for Cems Impossible quiz. As you can see the concept of this game came about through the inspiration of the game series the Impossible quiz. The concept of the game is to have the most ridiculous questions followed along with the most ridiculous answers.

I wanted to keep the background basic to resemble the Impossible quiz itself, its very childish and plain in its design. Overall there's 12 twelve questions, I wanted to keep it short and simple.

There were quite a few disadvantages to this quiz. One of them was the videos, although I had used URLS that ended in flv, it was still struggling to show these videos when uploaded, which was rather frustrating because then the questions with the videos had no relevance. However, they still work within flash itself and as their swf files when not uploaded to the internet. Although it isn't really a disadvantage, I found that the actionscript was a real bother, a lot of time it stopped me from doing more creative questions that would be more interactive with the user, e.g. move shapes or text to achieve a point , but combing so many actions together sometimes doesn't work.

There were also a lot of advantages to the quiz. I felt the comedy side and the music complemented one another. Also my little animations made it feel more fun. Having a character accompany your questions give it a more of a feel that its a game and not chore. I also like the shining tween effect I added to the my writing, it continually shines, and looks more appealing to the user who is playing it.

Overall I enjoyed doing this Online Environments games quiz, but I don't believe its for me, Virtual Environments is still my desired pathway.

3ds Max Development

Here are some images of my almost finished Batcave. As you can see I have made the Batcave rather modern. I didn’t want to make it to dull and un-hitec like the 60’s versions of the Batcave. However, this does not stand for the Batmobile. Although there is a more modern version of the Batmobile from the movies, I think it looks too much like a tank; the Batmobile from the animated series has a more darker and sinister feel to it, which represents Batmans personality more I reckon. Also the 60’s model of the Batmobile looks to awkward. It looks like a pathetic attempt and trying to be futuristic.

All I need to do now is decide whether to include a Batplane into it, and where to put the lights within the Batcave. Although this seems simple, it isn’t, because the Batcave itself is supposed to rather dark, but at the same time I need to add lighting and shadows to make everything look more realistic. So picking my vital spots for lighting is very important.

I know its probably rather obvious to do the Batcave (Batmans lair)......but what I thought was that although most people will do the Batcave, theres obviously loads of different intepratations on the Batcave, from movies, to tv shows or even comics they all have their own unique style. Therefore I'am going to make my Version of the Batcave a lot more personal and creative. Here are some images I found on the internet that have sprung some ideas I may use in my final design.

This clearly shows a lot of potential. They are many components that make this lair interesting. It’s very well structured. This is my most valuable source.

I like this photo because it seems rather futuristic and I like the colours used in it, I think the colours are very symbolic to the character of batman as well.

I like this picture because it really focuses on the interior of the Batcave (the rocks and sharp cones of stone coming down from the ceiling).

This is a rather interesting tutorial can help me develop the presentations of my chosen models. It does this by proper rendering a scene using mental ray's daylight system. I think this is a very helpful tutorial because it makes everything rather accurate and sharp.

This is also another useful tutorial. This tutorial is on viewpoints of your object or objects. I think it’s a very useful tutorial because it demonstrates how you can zoom into problems within the shape you may have got wrong.

I’ am back! Don’t act like you didn’t miss me...ha, so anyways I had my first lecture and seminar yesterday for my second term of multimedia. In this these two lessons we discovered that multimedia is not that different to the other subjects like theatre, they all consist of similar objectives and inspirations. This debate went on for two hours and was rather insightful on our options or my options, and now I can review and research individuals I didn’t even realise played a part into the multimedia spectrum. Within the seminar we discussed what we wanted to do next year. My decision so far is animation. A lot of people I talked to about it wanted to do filming. They said that it would open their way to making movies and even music videos if they so pleased. For my independent prationer research I’ am going to talk to more people on the course who are considering animation and possibly researching into the whole animation experience more by taking out some books from the library, and even watch some animated movies on the net for further understanding.

Interactive Narrative

Here is my interactive narrative. I enjoyed creating this, because I got a chance to input some of my characters that I draw into the piece. Drawing the pieces took some time, but overall I’ am pleased with the way they turned out. I’ am also happy that I didn’t include colour into them, I feel like that would have ruined them.

The most difficult part about this interactive narrative was the actions to include. At the first I didn’t understand what to do. But gradually I got the hang of it, and discovered it isn’t actually that hard. Usually I’ am just used to making flash animations in Flash 8, so this was a bit different not having a continuous motion within the frames.

The thing I’ am disappointed with most is that I didn’t get to include more noises into the piece. For some reason a few noises repeated onto other slides, which I did not want, so I had to remove them.

Advantages:
-The drawings.
-The ‘story line/ how to play’ page is quite helpful.
-The music was a great advantage; I thought it really helped create the atmosphere of the game.

Disadvantages:
-I could have blended the pictures and images of the internet into the background more.
-Made my own buttons.

I found this tutorial above very useful. Although it’s not Flash 8, the similarities in the two are almost identical. I think it’s a good tutorial because it shows how to create the figure through lines, and then fill it in very swiftly. I like how he demonstrates how to make the layers of animation a repeat of the previous frames, making the whole entire animation become a lot faster process. What I want to learn next is how to create a background behind the figure that animates in a loop but doesn’t get in the way of you animating your character.

The link above shows you a little animation I produced. I think this little character also has potential for a longer animation. I just got to figure out a plot line and some other reasonable characters he can interact with. I felt this piece went rather smoothly through its frames. I think its definite disadvantage, as I have mentioned before in my blog is that it needs colour. Again I will research into a online journal on how to make the whole process of filling in colour quicker.

I think they are effective because they project their messages well, so using these techniques I can strengthen my photos used in the interactive narrative. Here is a drawing I did a while ago. I’ am thinking of making an animation out of this character to get used to body movements in frames. I find it rather difficult at the moment to incorporate colour into my animations when I do play around with Flash 8 because it takes so long. To get around this I’ am going to study some online journals on the programme to find faster routes in making these animations a lot faster process.

One Shot Inspiration / One Shot Pieces

As you can see we finally made some one shot movies.

This practice one was a very basic idea, but it went very well. We were very fortunate to get an out of order machine to add to our plot line. As you can see we applied my idea of using a person’s point a view like in the video below. Using the hand gestures really adds to the character and interactivity of the piece. I think the music is also another advantage to the overall video because it gives it a very casual feel. The only disadvantage to the video is the zooming in. Unfortunately we didn’t realise that you couldn’t zoom in. But we didn’t go over the top with the zooming in it, so it doesn’t look that bad.

Here is the final video. We decided to shoot the video in Jonny Sedaratis room. The concept of the movie is about a student who is constantly bothered by his drunken friends to come out and drink with them, while he struggles to write his essay.

This one shot took many attempts pull off. Mostly because we had so much going on within it that when you messed up, you had to start again. Timing was very important in this as we had to time it right each time, or we had to start again.

Once again we used hand movements and the person’s point of view idea. This time we also added thoughts of the person as a second audio. We did this by going into a quiet room and recording the dialogue we wanted and putting it into the one shot during editing stages (this was done in a quiet room to give the audio a slight echo).

There were a few disadvantages to the video it thought. One of them was that I felt we could have acted a bit better in some places, some places lacked character. Also the clock, although we did include looking at the clock into the whole plot, we were hoping that we could have altered the clock so it look like a lot more time had passed in the one shot, as his friends kept coming in and out, so it looks a bit more realistic. But it never happened.

Accept for that I think the whole piece was excellent; it turned out a lot better than I thought. The music, the plot itself, setting, everything went well. I also had a great time filming it with my group, we had many laughs trying to act.

This clip if from a website named collegehumor (but embedded from youtube). I like this work due to its humour and its clever ideas. Although we have to include music into the mix, I thought it would be interesting to add thoughts to the audio, like in this clip. I think it will give a more overall understanding to whatever our piece will be themed around.

Although there is movement within the piece (which we are not allowed) I think the video has shown me that because we are not allowed to move, the atmosphere and the surroundings must be interesting, just like this club scene. So that the viewer we not become too bored from the one position.

I really like this artist; under the alias BarfQuestion he posts his work on the websites newgrounds and youtube. This kind of animation gives me a feel of our whiteboard animation, due to the fact it’s drawn in black on a white surface. I believe this kind of work deserves a lot of credit because it’s very hard to animate like this, especially if you don’t have a team behind you, it must takes ages to produce each piece. The shady effect is also another great touch. It adds character and a more mysterious attitude to the piece.

Practice Pixelation Piece and Final Pixelation Piece

Here is a practice pixelation piece.

Advantages:
• The scene when I change clothes is rather interesting, because it attracts viewers more because you’re seeing a range of colours in front of your eyes, rather than one boring colour on one singular t-shirt.
• The Play- doh scene was also excellent because you see the little creatures form slowly.
• Also the barrier of chairs disappearing was rather effective.
• The comedy and lighting within the piece were both strong also.

Disadvantages:
• In between the walking I could have made it more animated.
• I could have also probably made the piece slightly longer.
• Also probably used more props.
• I should have not used myself as one of the models.

This is my Final Pixelation piece. I’ am very pleased with the outcome.

The plot revolves around the character (Jiten Anand) invading the teddies territory. After he has been attacked by them he awakens to what he thought was a dream, only to find a teddy attacking him from behind when brushing his teeth at the end of the piece.

I enjoyed the editing in this one also because I got to play around with some effects on the pictures this time in Photoshop. I made them brighter and gave them a cartoon effect on top to add to the theme of the piece.

I wanted to keep the same kind of setting (halls) because it adds to the realism of a university student. If I had done it in another location with a different character or theme I think it would have been harder to make more believable because I wouldn’t have enough props.

Advantages

-The music, it’s very cheerful, and it complements the name of the piece ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’. The cheery tempo also adds to teddy bears innocence.
-The effects used in Photoshop.
-The constant experimentation in the hall way.
-The t -shirt changing scene.
-The chair scene.
-The plot itself.

Disadvantages

-Moves to fast in some areas of the video.
-The bedroom scene could have had more experimentation.
-I could have had more models for more interactivity.

I was introduced to Tomasz Bagiński by a family friend. I found his work very interesting from the start, not just due to the graphical content of his work, but his interesting concepts in his pieces. For example his piece 'Fallen Art' demonstrates a disturbing idea about suicide, but at the same time it delievers an imaginative plot. However, I found the piece 'The Cathederal' to be most effective and interesting one due to the fact that its not based around human lifestyle, its alien. Therefore, a lot more respectable because its clearly took a lot more work and thought to create such a non-fictional piece.

General Information: Tomasz Bagiński (To-mash Ba-geen-skee), Tomek Baginski (born January 10, 1976, Białystok) is a BAFTA Award-winning Polish artist and animator, best known for his Oscar-nominated short movie, The Cathedral (2002). For his newest short, Fallen Art (2004), he received a BAFTA Award for Best Short Animation and Grand Prix for Digital Shorts at Golden Horse Film Festival 2005 (shared with: Jarek Sawko and Piotr Sikora). Bagiński also created cinematics for The Witcher computer game based on the books of Andrzej Sapkowski

2009 WB Induction: Board Animation

In this introduction lesson we created board animations on whiteboards. We did this by using a camera with a stand to take pictures of a frame by frame animation. This technique is known as pixelation. This is done by taking a picture of your drawn piece on the board and slightly modifying it by rubbing it out and moving it slightly. So when you look back at the picutres, it looks like a sequence of movement is happening.

For our animation we had draw/animate a box and get it from one side of the house to the other using interesting concepts and gags to make the piece appealing. The piece was suppposed to last around 10 seconds. Unfortunately ours didnt meet the demands. However, I still found it to be successful. my groups animation is the one that begins from 1:08 in this youtube clip.

Overview of work:

Advantages:
- I think having the house animated is an excellent idea, because it gives the piece a more human feal. Doing this allows the interaction of the viewer and piece to connect easier.
- The use of fire and water (fire from the demon and water from the cloud) are well animated into the piece. I think we demonstrated the movement and flow of these two earth elements smoothly and effectively.
- I think the page being folded at the end is also a nice touch, as it gives a really comic book vibe of.

Disadvantages:
- I think the most important disadvantage is that it wasnt long enough. Having it not long enough stopped us from incoperating more ideas into the piece.
- Also the drawing got a bit sloppy and rushed near to the end of the piece, which discredited it slightly.
- Finally, I think we could have incoperated some human interaction with the board animations like other groups did. for example 00:51-00:53.

I really enjoy Waterlollies by Adam Phillips. I have watched his work grow on the website www.newgrounds.com for years now. To believe that animation like this is created in flash is outstanding. Most flash artists are not capable of putting this much detail into flash to the extent where it looks like it was actually drawn on paper and coloured in. His impressive blending methods, and the accurate line structures within the characters is what makes him stand out from the rest. He is the God of newgrounds.

Basic Information:

Adam Phillips (born January 1971) is an Australian freelance animator whose online alias is Chluaid (pronounced 'Clyde'). His recent work, for which he is best known, has consisted of flash animation compositions published on his website Bitey Castle and on the flash portal Newgrounds (there, as of May 21, 2009, his movies have over 12 million views and he is one of the highest ranked artists). He is the creator of the Brackenwood series.
Adam Phillips was a featured artist at the Adobe Design Center for the month of December, 2006. The alternate soundtrack for the YuYu in that link was composed by Lee Miller.

Pinhole camera:

A pinhole camera is a very simple camera. Instead of having a lens, it has a whole to project the image through onto paper. For our camera we used a beer can. We created this camera using the sources of a can, black card and some tape. In order to create this image we must expose the hole when in contact with your chosen landscape for around 8 seconds. From here we developed the pictures inside, some were successful and some weren't. Most of them weren't! HA!

Advantages:

- Its quick and simple.
- Its a quick process (unlike a shop were you have to develop it).

Disadvantages:

-It can damage easily.
-The pictures dont always develop well like a professional camera.
-Your not able to see through a lens what your capturing.
